Digital Hair Shading Tips by wick-y Digital Hair Shading Tips by wick-y
This is probably a bad idea since my last tutorial didn't go so well. ^^; Please remember that this is meant for beginners and I know I'm not an expert, I just wanted to share some tips I think would be helpful to those of you having trouble drawing semi-realistic hair. My examples aren't great (the hair came out fried-looking on the tips :P) but hopefully you understand how it's supposed to look. There are tons of other techniques; this is just the one I use. I use Photoshop 2.0 but this should work in any program. I hope some of you find this useful! :)

Thank you for all the favs and views guys, I really appreciate it!

Not sure I know what you mean, could you rephrase?  Sorry. ^^;  The hex code is #8B0202 if that's what you're asking.

sorry, i spelt it wrong.... the pallette colors you placed on the corner that you were so nice to give us for use...thats what i mean, i was wondering what the colors were for you to make this red hair. (i'm horrible with communication, so i hope i explained right)

Oh it's no problem, I just suck at understanding people. ^^;  The exact colors I used are in the little swatch things under each step.  Basically I started out with a dark, slightly orange red and gradually made it lighter and more purple. :)

Mh, thank you for this tutorial :D It really helped. Although I would ask, how do you make the edges of the hair look.. uhmm.. how do I put it.. Fuzzy? XD

Glad to help! :D Do you mean the tips of the hair? You just keep going over it with a small brush, it's really time consuming. Sorry, if that doesn't answer your question just tell me. ^^;

Ooohhh- Okay, I'll try doing that.. Another question though, if you don't mind xD

When you put in the lighter parts with a smaller brush- the one that looks like highlights- how do you do it in a way that the it like.. visibly pops but also doesn't stand out? I mean- guh, did that make sense? Ahaha sorry xD.. And also, is this all done in one layer? XD

Uh I'm not quite sure what you mean, could you clarify? ^^; But yeah, it's all one layer. :)

I mean.. The brighter part is clearly visible, but it doesn't look like a separate strand. Like- it doesn't stand out too much. Haha I'm sorry my question is confusing- bahahaha- I'm sure I shall figure it out :D Thank you anyways

Oh okay I see! I think it just has to do with the brush transparency and color, I'm not entirely sure since I don't usually draw hair quite like this anymore. ^^; Sorry if I didn't answer your question, let me know if you have any more.

I see. Haha I shall try doing that then. :)
Oh, okay. But still- I'm trying different hairstyles or at least, trying to find something I can be comfortable with, but I happen to like this one in particular kufufu. Bwahahah don't worry about it- at least you answer xD Squee~ Really? xD I might take you up on that offer someday ahahaha xD

No problem! Also, you might find it easier to draw the hair first with a brush that changes in pressure (don't shade it or anything with that brush, just draw a big blob in the shape you want the hair to be) then lock transparency for that layer and color it using a brush that changes in transparency/opacity. It might help with the problem you said you were having with the edges. Hopefully that makes sense. ^^;

This tutorial isn't particularly useful to me personally, because I paint in an entirely different style, but it's definitely a useful tutorial in general and I'm sure it'll be helpful to a lot of people :)
I wouldn't worry about stupid people who bash you for getting on the front page involuntarily. Seriously. You did not ask to have that last tutorial make it to the front page. I think people forget that the new system insures that the front page now has a lot more to do with diversity than "skill" (which is a debateable factor as it is) and that the artist has absolutely no control over whether their work shows up on the front page or not.
Keep up the good work and don't let people get you down <3

Wow, i can only imagine what caused you to have to make that foot note. However, as a beginner who has been trying ever so hard to sketch something nice on my ipad, that was awsome! Exactly the kind of simple technique that is helping me learn one step at a time. Many thanks.
